I believe strongly in extending learning beyond the classroom walls. This is why I am empowered to create activities that benefit everyone within the school and not just those in a particular classroom. Coding activities can often be seen in math class and maker clubs but I wanted to illustrate how they can be incorporated into a Language activity. The best part about this activity is that it is low floor but has unlimited potential for where the students can take it. It is multifaceted, and extends both computational thinking and problem solving skills. Most importantly it supports pedagogical practice within the curriculum.
Materials:
- Makey Makey
- Paper
- Pencil
- Computer (Chromebook, Netbook, Desktop, Etc)
- Graphic Organizers (Digital Story Graphic Organizer & Storyboard Template)
- Scratch
While this activity can be done entirely online I see ample benefits in pre planning via paper & pencil. Although I embrace progressive education as well as educational technology there is merit to utilizing other mediums. SEE HERE
This activity can extend to poetry, biographies, memoirs, etc. Students have the opportunity to take this experience and create a story made entirely out of code. To increase collaboration among their peers students can extend to “choose your own adventure” stories as well.
